Georgia Southern opens up its home slate with win over Chattanooga; faces SCSU next on Friday
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis defeated Chattanooga, 6-1, in its Spring home opener from the Wallis Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the young season and avenge a 5-2 loss suffered at the hands of the Mocs last season. Chattanooga falls to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
Doubles action saw the Eagles take the lead with Matthew Mitchell and Edoardo Santoni picking up a 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, but Chattanooga evened things up with a win at No. 2 doubles. Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor clinched the doubles point for the Eagles with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, the Eagles would clinch the victory with three straight set singles wins. Santoni delivered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Martin Delnido at No. 3 singles, then Willy Mirarchi notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Cortland Grove at No. 4 singles. Albert Widelll then earned a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Jaxon Lamb at No. 6 singles for the deciding match.
Gregoire Delattre and Albert Saar would provide the final points with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, prevailing in 10-point third-set tiebreakers.
"I saw a team that was excited to play," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said about the home opener. "I thought we were very composed as we were working through the ups and downs of the match today. Really pleased with that. It wasn't our best tennis, but we talked a lot as a team about how we didn't necessarily need our best tennis to do what it takes to build this team where it needs to go."
Georiga Southern returns to action on Friday, hosting South Carolina State in a 10 a.m. match at Wallis. The match moves from its Thursday date and will be a doubleheader with the women's team also taking on SCSU at 1 p.m.
