Eagles now prepare for short week at Old Dominion
The Eagles' 11-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that ended early in the fourth quarter pulled them within 20-17, but the push was not enough to overcome the Dukes. The Eagles threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns, while the Dukes finished with 438 yards of total offense and went 4-for-5 on fourth down.
The Eagles leaned on the pass in the first quarter, with Max Johnson completing 7 of 9 for 95 yards, including a 50-yard completion to Jeremiah Ware and an 18-yard touchdown to Taylor Bradshaw, and went 2-for-3 on third down. The Dukes rushed for 66 yards and held a 7:49-7:11 edge in possession, but the Eagles stopped a fourth-down try at their 36 and limited the Dukes to a 33-yard field goal after an interception to lead 7-3 after the quarter.
The Eagles and Dukes traded field goals in the second quarter, with Tripp Bryant finishing a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 28-yarder before Morgan Suarez answered from 21 yards on the final play. The Eagles recorded two sacks and held the Dukes to 3 points on a 15-play, 89-yard drive, taking a 10-6 lead into halftime.
The Dukes outscored the Eagles 14-0 in the third quarter and led 20-10 entering the fourth. The Eagles produced 73 rushing yards, including Tyrese Woodgett's 47-yard run, but a lost fumble and a missed 51-yard field-goal attempt kept the Eagles off the board while the Dukes completed 6 of 7 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles leaned on the passing game in the fourth quarter, completing 11 of 15 throws for 167 yards and two touchdowns while being held to minus-1 rushing yard. Johnson's touchdown passes to Taeo Todd and Andre Greene Jr. helped the Eagles outscore the Dukes 14-7 in the quarter, but the Dukes held the ball for 8:50, went 2-for-2 on fourth down and closed out a 27-24 result.
Johnson completed 26 of 38 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns and added 18 rushing yards. Josh Dallas caught eight passes for 111 yards and returned two punts for 15 yards. Aaron Sears led the Eagles with 11 tackles, while Brandon Tyson added 10. Diego Aviles recorded eight tackles and one sack.
