STATESBORO– Georgia Southern volleyball (9-1) won the first set 25-10 against South Carolina State (2-8) and never looked back, closing out a dominant sweep and hitting .375 in the process.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to get a lot of different players in the mix," head coach
Chad Willis said. "Shoutout to Anna and Sam, who I think did a great hob coming in and getting 23 kills from the left and playing clean volleyball, which has been an emphasis all week. I thought we did some really nice things offensively."
Three
Kayla Knowles kills in the opening set pushed the Eagles to a 6-1 advantage and they were off and running. A 7-0 run with a trifecta of
Reagan Barth kills extended the lead to 22-8, ending at 25-10. The team hit .452 in the first frame and held the Bulldogs to a -.038 rate.
The Bulldogs stabilized in the second set, but never took the lead against the Eagles. Barth and
Anna Powell had back-to-back kills at 15-13, and Barth, aided by a block from Knowles, helped close the set with a 25-17 win after a few GS runs.
Continuing the theme of hitting over .300 in each set, the home team converted at a .353 rate in the third. Powell and
Sam Bowron extended their kill totals to over double-digits in a 25-18 victory, sealing another win at Hanner Fieldhouse - the fifth in a row this season and 22nd straight in the regular season.
Bowron's 12 kills led the team, hitting .632, and Powell had 11 of her own, hitting .556.
Lexi Duffy got the lion's share of time in the setter position, recording a career-high 27 assists in the win.
"Games like tonight really let us show our toolkits, especially the pins," Bowron said. "This also lets us prepare for more anticipated matches and get our bodies ready going into tough weekends."
On the defensive side,
Maddie Cugino (15) and Barth (10) both had double-digit digs, followed by Bowron (7),
Mayte Camacho (7),
Alex Myers (5) and
Hadley Porter (4). The Eagles used 13 different players on the night. Willis recorded his 99th career win as Eagles head coach, still looking to become the third coach in program history to reach 100.
Attention turns toward the non-conference finale Saturday - a big-time matchup with Florida State at 2:00.
"I think it's an opportunity to culminate non-conference play with a big opponent like Florida State on our home floor," Willis said. 'We've talked about protecting Hanner, and one of our team goals this year was to stay undefeated in Hanner. We get another chance to compete here in front of Eagle Nation, and we know the crowd will bring great energy. We also know Florida State is a tall task. They've been a strong team and a quality opponent. Saturday is an opportunity to set the tone for conference play and hopefully pick off a quality team."
