Barrett earns consecutive Setter of the Week award, Lovett named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time
STATESBORO- Junior setter Kirsten Barrett earned SBC Setter of the Week for the second consecutive time and senior libero Ashlyn Lovett was named Defensive Player of the Week for a second time, the league announced on Tuesday.
Reigning Setter of the Week Barrett had another strong performance in the Eagle Invitational, named MVP after averaging 11.44 assists per set, recording 103 of them in the Eagles' 3-0 weekend and finishing with an impressive 38.3% assist mark.Â
She had 35+ assists in two of the contests, including 39 in three frames in the sweep of Furman on Saturday. In addition, Barrett averaged 2 digs/set, .44 aces/set, and registered six kills including a diving save off-balance that was highlighted as the no. 8 play on Sunday's SportsCenter Top 10.Â
Barrett surpassed 1,000 career assists on Thursday night, and her career-best 9.64 assists/set currently leads the Sun Belt.
Lovett remains the catalyst for the team leading the Sun Belt in digs per set at 18.46. Lovett recorded 64 digs in nine sets (7.11/set) as the Eagles went 3-0 and did not lose a single set at the Eagle Invitational.Â
On Thursday against North Carolina A&T, Lovett broke the three-set program record with 31 digs (10.33/set), a record dating back to 2011. Lovett holds the program records for digs in three-set and five-set matches.Â
She added 16 digs on Friday and 17 on Saturday, recording no receiving errors in the three games across the weekend. For the season, Lovett leads the SBC with a career-high 5.64 digs per set and is top five in total digs. In the NCAA, Lovett ranks in the top ten in digs and fourth in digs per set with 158 and 5.64 respectively.
Barrett became the first Georgia Southern athlete to be named back-to-back SBC Player of the Week since 2019, when football's Wesley Kennedy III earned it on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. She is the first volleyball player to do so since joining the Sun Belt, and the first since Alex Beecher did it in 2012 in the SOCON.
The Eagles have had a player on the POTW list for three straight weeks for the first time in program history, and the first by any GS sport since football also did so in 2014, becoming the first team to have two players on the POTW teams in consecutive weeks.
GS now has had five POTW honors this season: Lovett (Defensive, Week 1 & 3), Barrett (Setter, Week 2 & 3) and Jillian Gray (Offensive, Week 2). The volleyball team has never had five players of the week in a season during its time in the Sun Belt.
The Eagles will continue their impressive start to the season this weekend by hosting the Bash in the Boro with the first game taking place on Thursday against Alabama State.
