HUNTINGTON, W. Va.- In its first true road game in over a month, Georgia Southern volleyball (11-1, 1-0 Sun Belt) felt right at home, sweeping Marshall (9-7, 0-3) for its first SBC win of the season - and tenth victory in a row.
"It was a solid effort tonight to open up Sun Belt play on the road," head coach
Chad Willis said. "I thought we did a good job settling into first contact as the match wore on and did a nice job of executing the game plan. We got things going through the middle and that opened things up at the pin, great work on both sides of the ball. I'm proud of the bench for bringing consistent energy and to the team for staying connected and battling on the road."
Marshall fought the Eagles hard during the first set, getting to set point three times, but the Eagles never wavered, fighting back to win 27-25 and notching 20 digs in the opening frame.
Paige Powers sealed it with a kill.
The Herd ran to an early 3-2 lead, but the Eagles answered back with an 8-0 run highlighted by three
Reagan Barth aces - including two in a row - her first three of a career-best six in the game.
That run proved to be all the Eagles needed, hitting .360 with just five errors in a 25-17 set win, never letting the Herd back to within striking distance.
Looking to sweep for the seventh consecutive match and win its 22nd set in a row, GS never took the foot off the gas, hitting above .300 again. Back-to-back kills by
Lydia Seymour put the Eagles up 10-5.
Maggie Sale and Barth combined on a block to send the Herd packing, winning 3-0 and the set 25-18.
Barth shined bright in the match, nearing a triple-double with a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs while also contributing the career-high six aces. Barth also hit a scorching .517 (18-3-29) in the win.
No other Eagle reached double figures in kills, but
Paige Powers (8) and
Jillian Gray (7) rounded out the trifecta. Lovett added 11 digs, and Barrett notched a solid 39 assists and 7 digs in the win.
GS recorded 10 aces in a match for the first time since 10/21/22 and held the Thundering Herd to just one ace during the entire match.
The 22 consecutive sets won equals the high mark set from 10/19-11/7/03, with the program record still standing at 29 in 1993. The Eagles have won 10 in a row for the first time since 10/14-11/17/12.
Georgia Southern will look to keep the train moving on Friday night with another game against the Herd.
