Get to know your 2023-24 Eagle golf squad
STATESBORO - This summer, GSEagles.com is getting to know each of the 10 members of the 2023-24 Georgia Southern men's gof team. Up next is junior Brantley Baker, who would love to be able to teleport and feels he would thrive in a unique sport if he wasn't golfing. Let's get to know Brantley.
Name: Brantley Baker
Hometown: Leesburg, GA
Home Course: Doublegate CC
Major: Construction Management
Why did you choose Georgia Southern?
I chose Georgia Southern because when I visited here my first time, it felt like home. It is very similar to Albany, where I'm from, and was just a great fit from the beginning. The coaches were great when I got to talk to them, the practice facilities were amazing, and the athletic staff were all so nice when I visited. It seemed like a no-brainer from day 1.
What is your goal for this summer?
I have four goals for this summer, three golf related and one not. My non-golf related goal for this summer is to complete my Construction Internship that is required to graduate. My three golf goals are to improve my physical fitness, my short putting, and consistently hitting a fade as my go-to shot shape.
What's your favorite club in your bag?
I would have to say my putter. It is a club I am always looking forward to improving with and a constant challenge, which I find exciting.
If you hadn't gone to college to play golf, which sport would you have tried to play collegiately?
This one for me is a no-brainer. I would be on the bass fishing team. I love the outdoors and I love fishing. I think I would have a blast in college fishing every day.
Have you had any holes in one? If so, how many and what's your favorite one if you've had more than one?
I have had four so far. My favorite one so far was up in Minnesota this past Fall at The Gopher Invitational. We won that tournament as a team, I got to see my teammate Wilson Andress pick up his first collegiate win, and I had a slam dunk hole in one. It had to be one of the best tournaments I have gotten to play in because of all the cool stuff that happened that week.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I would like to be able to teleport anywhere at any time.
It would be so cool just to go to Paris or Australia for the day without having to get on a plane.
If you had to watch one movie on repeat, what would it be?
I would have to go with one of my favorite movies of all time: Ratatouille. Such a classic and I can probably recite every line from the movie.
If you could give your ninth-grade self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Slow down and enjoy every moment. You don't get to do things twice and it's best to savor every minute of it when you can.
If you could go back in time, what historical event would you want to see?
I would like to have a firsthand experience of Tiger's U.S. Open win at Pebble Beach. In my opinion, that is the most impressive win of his career and potentially all time. He dominated the field and played flawlessly.
What song do you pick to get you hyped up?
If I can only pick one song to hype me up, I would probably go with Gods of War by Def Leppard.
The 2023-24 Georgia Southern golf schedule will be announced later this summer. The Eagles return eight players from last year's squad and welcome two newcomers to the team.
