STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern football squad went through its first team scrimmage of the spring on Monday afternoon at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
Jjay Mcafee opened the scoring with a 13-yard pass from newcomer
Davis Brin. On the next drive,
Tyler Jordan bulled his way into the end zone from 10 yards out for the second score.
After several stops by the defense,
Terrance Gibbs punched it in from the 3-yard line in a red zone situation where the offense started at the 14-yard line. In a similar situation, freshman
DeAndre Buchannon caught a 14-yard touchdown pass by
Colton FitzGerald. In a third red zone situation, Jordan scored his second touchdown, this time from 1 yard out. The final red zone score came on a 5-yard scoring pass from Brin to
Khaleb Hood.
The quarterback duo of Brin and
JC French threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns. The running back trio of
OJ Arnold, Gibbs and Jordan ran for 173 yards and five touchdowns, although several scores came late in set goal-line situations from the 2-yard line. Five receivers—
Derwin Burgess Jr., Mcafee, Hood, Buchannon and
Jaylon Barden—combined for 247 yards and three scores.
Defensively,
Elhadj Fall and
Trevon Locke had sacks while
Jacob Ferguson and
Davion Rhodes has a pass break up. The offense didn't turn the ball over in the 90-play scrimmage.
The Eagles will hold their second of three scrimmages on Saturday morning at Paulson Stadium.
