STATESBORO - Georgia Southern senior rifle squad member Addy Burrow will make history Saturday when she becomes the second student-athlete in the program's nine-year history to compete at the NCAA Air Rifle Championships, hosted by the University of Akron in Ohio at the Rhodes Arena. The two-day event will crown the overall team champion, as well as individual champions in smallbore and air rifle.
Burrow, from Williamson, Georgia, qualified as one of seven individuals for the air rifle with a 595 in the NCAA Qualifier. She has been assigned to relay No. 2 at point No. 2, with a call to the line at 10:45 a.m., with prep and sighters at 11 a.m. and the competition running from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
There will be two relays for the air rifle championships. The first will begin at 9 a.m. while the second one will begin at 11:15 a.m. All 47 competitors will shoot 60 shots and have 75 minutes to complete the process. Once everyone is completed, the top eight scores from the two relays will advance to the finals, which begin at 2 p.m. In the event of a tie for eighth place, the multipliers scored in the 60 shots will be the determining factor.
In the finals, competitors will shoot three, five-shot series (4:10 each) before eliminating the seventh- and eighth-place shooters. After another five-shot series, the sixth- and fifth-place shooters will be eliminated and the third- and fourth-place shooters will be eliminated after one last five-shot series. The final two shooters will then go head-to-head in a single-shot competition. Two points will be awarded for a win while a tie is one point apiece. The first shooter to reach 16 points will be crowned the national champion.
In the prelims, no decimals are used, meaning a 10.9 (a perfect shot) is the same as a 10.0. However, in the finals, decimals are used and are a big factor over the course of competition.
Burrow was named the SoCon Air Rifle of the Year and was runner-up at the conference championship. She has averaged a school-record 594.214 in air rifle this season with a career best of 598 on Nov. 12 at Jacksonville State.
Rosemary Kramer, who placed third in air rifle at the 2019 NCAA Championship, is the only other Eagle to make it to the event. Burrow and North Georgia's Elysa Walter will represent the Southern Conference at the event.
Burrow is seeking to become the first NCAA individual national champion in any sport at Georgia Southern (Buddy Harris won the 1964 NAIA national titles in horizontal bars and parallel bars in gymnastics).
