Soren Butler Era Begins This Weekend

Eagles travel to Morehead State for pair of matches
STATESBORO - The 17th-ranked Georgia Southern rifle squad kicks off its 2022-23 season and the Soren Butler Era this weekend with a pair of matches at No. 16 Morehead State. The two squads will match up on Friday and Saturday, with calls to the line at 8 a.m. both days.
The matches will be the first for Butler, who takes over a SoCon-winning program from Sandra Worman. Butler came to Statesboro from West Virginia University where he served as an assistant coach for the perennial power Mountaineer program. Along with assistant coach Abby Buesseler, the coach staff features two highly decorated shooters leading the program.
"Through repeated efforts of doing what we said we were going to do, I think we've built a nice level of trust this past summer and preseason," Butler said. "Having Abby as an assistant has been great and she's really helped out both on the line and with building personal relationships with the athletes. I think the team has bought into our vision and now we're excited to see how we shoot this weekend."
The Eagles return all eight shooters from last year's Southern Conference Championship squad, including smallbore athlete of the year and conference champion Erin Ballard and three-time air rifle athlete of the year Ashley Judson. Amy Visconti (smallbore) and Kinsley Hannon (air rifle) also earned spots on the podium last year at the conference meet and are joined on the roster this year by returners Bella Gamez, Lillian Herring, Anna Mayo and Gabby Morrow. Joining the team is NC State grad transfer Addy Burrow, who has two years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm really excited for this first weekend as a head coach," Butler said. "The girls have been working really hard and seeing some improvements already. We're big on trusting the process and staying away from the score as a mindset, but I know everyone wants to see the results of the hard work they're putting in. I'm excited about what I've seen from this team early on."
