STATESBORO – Georgia Southern's volleyball student-athletes were treated to a surprise Wednesday night when they entered Hanner Fieldhouse.
Their game court has been upgraded to a Taraflex® FIVB Sport M Plus portable playing surface, and the new floor will make its debut this weekend when the Eagles host the GATA Challenge Friday and Saturday in Hanner Fieldhouse.
The surface features Georgia Southern's logo, signature fonts and colors, and its markings are specific to volleyball. The Taraflex® FIVB court, manufactured by Gerflor and installed by Southeastern Surfaces & Equipment, offers a 35 percent improvement in shock absorption over a traditional wooden court and a 73 percent improvement on the Impact Protection Index. Taraflex® is globally renowned for its superior long-term safety features, its immediate protection of athletes and enhanced grip and slide for the best playability. The padding makes diving, sliding and jumping easier on the student-athletes' bodies.
"What an exciting day for Georgia Southern Volleyball!," said Georgia Southern head coach Chad Willis. "Taraflex provides a first-class playing surface, which will significantly impact the health and well-being of our student-athletes while giving Hanner Fieldhouse the look and feel of a premier volleyball facility. On behalf of our staff and team, thank you to Jared Benko, our administration, the athletic foundation, and all of our donors who helped make this project a reality. Hanner provides one of the most electric game-day experiences in the country, we can't wait to share this updated layout with Eagle Nation as we continue to elevate our program on and off the court."
Taraflex® FIVB is the official court for the Federation of International Volleyball worldwide and has been selected as the official Olympic volleyball court surface for 11 consecutive games beginning with Montreal in 1976 to Tokyo in 2021. Gerflor has provided Taraflex floors for every major volleyball national or world competition over the last five years.
The Eagles will play the first match on the new surface Friday at 10 a.m. when they host Queens. The Eagles also play host to Saint Francis Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Chattanooga Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of the GATA Challenge.
