Women’s Golf Racks Up Sun Belt Honors

Eagles win Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year.

NEW ORLEANS – To the victor went a majority of the spoils as the Sun Belt Conference announced its postseason awards and all-conference teams Thursday.

Sarunchana Rattanasin was named the league's Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference, while Mia Kness was named Newcomer of the Year and Mimi Burke was named the Coach of the Year. Abby Newton also earned first-team All-Sun Belt accolades.

Georgia Southern won its first Sun Belt Championship in April, earning the league's bid to the NCAA Championship. The awards were voted on by the league's coaches, and all-conference kudos were determined by Golfstat rankings.

Rattanasin tallied seven top-20 outings, including six top-10s, four top-5s and medalist honors at the Sun Belt Championship and the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. The freshman recorded par or better in 14 rounds, including six in the 60s, and ranked fourth in the Sun Belt in scoring average (73.72). Rattanasin matched a school record with 66 in the Buccaneer Classic on her way to a second-place finish and shot a 66 in the first round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.

Kness competed in the lineup in all 11 tournaments and helped the Eagles to two team wins and three runner-up finishes. The fifth-year senior tied for second at the Sun Belt Championship, her best finish as an Eagle, and shot a season-low 69 in the first round. Kness shot 70 in the final round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate and took eighth.

Newton posted seven top-20 finishes, including two top-10s and a career best third in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. The sophomore ranked sixth in the Sun Belt in scoring average (74.63) and tied for 12th at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. She recorded par or better in seven rounds and matched the school record with a career-best 66 in the final round at Mimosa Hills.

Burke led the Eagles to the Sun Belt Championship in her first season as head coach of the Eagles, and Georgia Southern finished seventh at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. The Eagles posted two team wins and three runner-up finishes while shooting eight of the 10 lowest rounds in program history, and their season scoring average of 298.63 is the best in school history. The Eagles' three-round total of 851 at the Buccaneer Classic in the fall broke the school record by 20 strokes, and their 278 in the second round was also a school record.
