NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Georgia Southern men's golf team played its final five holes 6-under to post a 278 team score Tuesday, and the Eagles are tied for third after 36 holes of the NCAA Championship New Haven Regional at Yale Golf Course.
Georgia Southern (-12) is tied with North Florida, two strokes ahead of No. 8 Texas Tech (-10) in fifth place. Illinois (-5), ranked 20th in the country, is sixth, followed by Virginia (-4) and UCF (-2).
Fifth-ranked North Carolina (-20) shot 13-under today to move three spots up the leaderboard into second and trails No. 17 Wake Forest (-21) by a stroke. The top-5 teams and top individual not on those teams from each of the six regionals will advance to the finals, which will be played May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Eagles came to the 14th hole 4-over as a team, but the four counters each played 14, 15, 16 and 18 1-under as a group and played the 17th hole 2-under to finish 2-under for the day.
Senior
Ben Carr made five birdies in the round to lead the Eagles with a 67, and classmate
Mason Williams birdied four of his last five holes to post a 68. Freshman
Hogan Ingram played his final five holes 1-under to shoot a 71, and classmate
Brantley Baker birdied 18 to finish with a 72 for the final counting score.
The field features eight teams ranked nationally in the top-50, including Georgia Southern, and 15 individuals ranked in the top-100.
