Mason Williams fired a 65, and classmate
Wilson Andress shot a 66 to lead the Georgia Southern men's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Championship New Haven Regional Monday at Yale Golf Course.
The Eagles (-10) are in third place, three strokes behind No. 17 Wake Forest (-13) and North Florida, who are tied for first. Eighth-ranked Texas Tech (-9) is in fourth, and fifth-ranked North Carolina (-7) is tied for fifth with No. 20 Illinois. The top-5 teams and top individual not on those teams from each of the six regionals will advance to the finals, which will be played May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Brantley Baker shot a 69, and classmate
Hogan Ingram was the final counter with an even-par 70. Senior
Ben Carr shot a 71. Georgia Southern's team score of 270 is the program's lowest in an NCAA Regional.
Williams made six birdies on the day, played the back nine 3-under and birdied the par-5, 580-yard 18th. Andress also made six birdies with two coming on 16 and 18 to play his final seven holes 3-under.
Baker shot 1-under on the front and birdied 16 and 17 to get under par for the day. Ingram was 3-under on the front with birdies on 1, 7 and 8 and made par on his final six holes of the round.
The field features eight teams ranked nationally in the top-50, including Georgia Southern, and 15 individuals ranked in the top-100.
