Team continues to prepare for 2022 season
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern football team went through its first extended, live scrimmage of the spring session Saturday afternoon at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
All five quarterbacks saw extensive action in the 80-play affair, combining to throw for five touchdowns against just one interception. Tyler Jordan opened the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown run and the Eagles scored several other times on the ground with a few at the end coming in short-yardage situations.
Jjay Mcafee had two touchdown catches while Amare Jones led the way with eight catches.
Anthony Beck II averaged 48.7 yards on six punts and Justin Meyers had an interception.
"Today was really back and forth," said head coach Clay Helton. "I thought the offense started out really fast and made some explosive plays. We saw explosive plays all day, but I told them it's all about consistency. What was nice to see was the explosive plays from the skill players; there were a number of them today. The quarterbacks did a nice job of protecting the ball today with as many passes as were thrown. I thought the defense at the end stood tall from the 10-yard line and in and showed some toughness and physicality. Overall it was a really good day."
The Eagles will be back on the field next week in their third week of the spring season. The season opener is set for Sept. 3 at home against Morgan State.
