STATESBORO - All 32 NFL squads have opened preseason camp, meaning that everyone is now officially beginning preparations for the upcoming 2021 season. They are training for the long road that culminates in Inglewood, California, on Feb. 13, 2021 for Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium.
Georgia Southern will once again have a strong presence in the League as nine former Eagle players are in camp. Here's a list of all nine, where their training camp is going on, as well as their preseason schedule.
Tyler Bass, K, and Matt Breida, RB
Buffalo Bills: ADPRO Training Center in Orchard Park, N.Y.
Game 1: at Detroit Lions, Friday, Aug. 13 (NFL Network)
Game 2: at Chicago Bears, Saturday, Aug. 21 (NFL Network)
Game 3: vs. Green Bay Packers, Saturday, Aug. 28 (NFL Network)
Briefly: Bass is firmly entrenched as the Bills' kicker after a breakout rookie season in which he set a franchise scoring record; Breida will battle for a roster spot in a deep running back room for the defending AFC East champs. He signed with the Bills this offseason after playing in Miami last season
Raymond Johnson III, DE
New York Giants: Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, N.J.
Game 1: vs. New York Jets, Saturday, Aug. 14
Game 2: at Cleveland Browns, Sunday, Aug. 22 (NFL Network)
Game 3: vs. New England Patriots, Sunday, Aug. 29 (NFL Network)
Briefly: Johnson III signed as an undrafted free agent and will have to battle to earn a roster spot. He may have to show out on special teams to enhance his chances, although a spot on the practice squad seems a worst-case-scenario.
Younghoe Koo, K
Atlanta Falcons: IBM Performance Center in Flowery Branch, Ga.
Game 1: vs. Tennessee Titans, Friday, Aug. 13
Game 2: at Miami Dolphins, Saturday, Aug. 21
Game 3: vs. Cleveland Browns, Sunday, Aug. 29 (NBC)
Briefly: Koo is firmly entrenched as the Falcons' kicker after a Pro Bowl season in 2020. If he can keep his cleats from being stolen, another big season is expected after signing an extension with the franchise.
Ryan Langan, LS
Los Angeles Chargers: Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Game 1: at Los Angeles Rams, Saturday, Aug. 14 (NFL Network)
Game 2: vs. San Francisco 49ers, Sunday, Aug. 22 (NFL Network)
Game 3: at Seattle Seahawks, Saturday, Aug. 28 (NFL Network)
Briefly: Langan quickly signed as an undrafted free agent following the Draft. He will have to beat out incumbent Cole Mazza, who is in the final year of his contract. With a new coaching staff in place and after a shaky 2020 season by the Chargers' special teams, Langan has a great shot of continuing his remarkable run from 8-man football to the NFL.
Jerick McKinnon, RB
Kansas City Chiefs: Spratt Stadium Complex in St. Joseph, Mo.
Game 1: at San Francisco 49ers, Saturday, Aug. 14
Game 2: at Arizona Cardinals, Friday, Aug. 20 (ESPN)
Game 3: vs. Minnesota Vikings, Friday, Aug. 27 (NFL Network)
Briefly: After spending several seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, McKinnon makes the move to Kansas City, where he is expected to be used as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said of McKinnon: "I think he's going to be a playmaker. I've seen it from day one, right when he got in here."
Joshua Moon, S
Seattle Seahawks: Virginia Mason Field in Renton, Wash.
Game 1: at Las Vegas Raiders, Saturday, Aug. 14
Game 2: vs. Denver Broncos, Saturday, Aug. 21
Game 3: vs. Los Angeles Chargers, Sunday, Aug. 29 (NFL Network)
Briefly: Moon, who has been out of the league since being a final-round cut casualty of the Jaguars a few years ago, signed with Seattle this past spring. He will be in a tough battle for a roster spot, but could enhance his chances by showing out on special teams.
Donald Rutledge Jr., ILB
Arizona Cardinals: State Farm Stadium Glendale, Ariz.
Game 1: vs. Dallas Cowboys, Friday, Aug. 13 (NFL Network)
Game 2: vs. Kansas City Chiefs, Friday, Aug. 20 (ESPN)
Game 3: at New Orleans Saints, Saturday, Aug. 28
Briefly: Rutledge Jr., who signed a Future Reserve contract with the Cardinals last February and moves to inside linebacker after playing safety in college. He will be in a tough battle for a roster spot, but could enhance his chances by showing out on special teams.
Kindle Vildor, CB
Chicago Bears: Halas Hall in Lake Forest, Ill.
Game 1: vs. Miami Dolphins, Saturday, Aug. 14 (NFL Network)
Game 2: vs. Buffalo Bills, Saturday, Aug. 21 (NFL Network)
Game 3: at Tennessee Titans, Saturday, Aug. 28 (NFL Network)
Briefly: The 2021 offseason saw the Chicago Bears release All-Pro cornerback Kyle Fuller, which is good news for Vildor. He started the Bears' Playoff game and is receiving rave reviews early in camp from general manager Ryan Pace, who praised Vildor in the team's opening press conference for training camp. "That was kind of the bright side of that is that he got a lot of valuable play time down the stretch and he definitely can push for the starting job. He has that kind of ability, and he looked really good this offseason."
Clubs are allowed to carry a 90-man roster to begin camp. Rosters must be cut down to 85 players by Aug. 17 and 80 players by Aug. 24. Prior to 4 p.m., New York time, on Aug. 31, clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List. Simultaneously with the cut-down to 53, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active List.
