STATESBORO – Georgia Southern men's golf coach Carter Collins announced today that Colin Bowles and Ben Carr have earned the program's Dr. Richard Rogers Award for excellence in the classroom and on the course for the 2019-20 season.
Bowles posted a 4.0 grade point average and a 71.25 scoring average to earn the honor in the fall. Carr notched a 3.6 grade point average and a 70.17 scoring average to win the award in the spring.
"I was excited and very pleased when Coach Collins told me that Colin and Ben were the two most recent recipients of the award that I am proud to have named after me," said Rogers. "These two members of the Eagles men's golf team represent Georgia Southern's finest examples of the true student-athlete. It is very gratifying for me to be associated with this most accomplished program in Georgia Southern athletics."
Named in honor of Dr. Richard Rogers, one of the golf program's biggest supporters, Georgia Southern's former Faculty Athletics Representative and chair of the Psychology Department, the award is given each semester to the Eagle who best exemplifies the term student-athlete.
"We are very proud of Colin Bowles and Ben Carr for earning this prestigious award," said Collins. "Dr Richard Rogers is a fan of tough competitors on the course and in the classroom, Colin and Ben both fit those characteristics very well. Both were huge contributors to our two team victories in the 2019-20 season as well as the Male GPA Award & President's Award on the academic side. Having this award named after Dr Rogers is a perfect fit and we are honored to have him and his wife Mrs Ruth Ann a part of our program."
Rogers started at Georgia Southern as an assistant professor in psychology in 1970, and was elevated to chair of the psychology department in 1992. He served as chair for 13 years before retiring as chair in 2005.
