STATESBORO - It was a busy 24 hours for new Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Jared Benko as he and his family were officially introduced to Eagle Nation Monday at a series of events and gatherings.
Benko, flanked by his wife Sarah and boys Hudson and Cooper, flew into Statesboro Regional Airport Monday evening to the greeting of the Southern Pride Marching Band, GS Cheer and GUS. Already decked out in their finest Georgia Southern gear, University President Kyle Marrero welcomed them to Statesboro with all the pomp and circumstance worthy of such a notable hire.
The new director made the most of his first day on campus. He began the day by meeting the entire athletic department staff at 8 a.m., followed by a meeting with the head coaches and representatives of the University Athletic Council.
After lunch with his Senior Staff, Benko finally had a chance to gather his thoughts and prepare for his formal press conference. In front of a slew of local media, family, invited guests, staff and student-athletes, Benko was formally introduced by Marrero and then gave his opening remarks to outline his vision. Over the course of the day, Benko kept coming back to three main points: tradition, blue collar work ethic and innovation. He outlined his plans for the Eagles both in the short term and down the road.
After one-on-ones with the media, he then had a chance to meet the local supporters of the Eagles at a public meet-and-greet at Bishop Alumni Center where he was once again introduced by Marrero. After that event was over, he drove over to Allen E. Paulson Stadium where he took in a few minutes of practice before speaking briefly to the team between periods.
His day ended with the Georgia Southern Sun Belt Men's Basketball Tournament game as he met the patrons coming in and then walk in the stands to introduce himself, something he plans to do at most events. He was introduced to the crowd in the first half and then wrapped up his obligations with an interview with
Danny Reed at halftime on the radio broadcast.
Benko and his family will remain in town for a few days, scouting schools and housing, as well as meeting with as many groups and staff members as he can before returning to Starkville to finish off his tenure at Mississippi State.
April 1 is Benko's first official day on the job.
