Judson named SoCon Air Rifle Athlete of the Year
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern rifle program wrapped up its 2019-20 season on Sunday at the SoCon Rifle Championship at the Shooting Sports Education Center.
On Saturday, freshman Ashley Judson was named second-team all-conference after finishing eighth in the smallbore. Needing a strong final 10-shot series, Judson hit a 10 on the final shot to propel her into the finals by one point. She finished eighth in her first finals appearance. Freshman Lillian Herring shot a 550 to place 15th, Gabby Morrow placed 29th with a 536 and Amelia Pierce rounded out the scoring with a 530 to place 32nd.
On Sunday, Judson fired a 583 to place second in the preliminaries while Morrow shot a 572 and made the finals as the eighth seed. Herring shot a 550 to place 31st and Pierce shot a 549 to place 33rd. Judson was named second-team all-conference after finishing sixthth in the finals and Morrow was also named second-team all-conference after finishing seventh in the finals.
Judson was named the SoCon Air Rifle Athlete of the Year for having the highest season average. It is the third straight year Georgia Southern has had the Air Rifle Athlete of the Year (Rosemary Kramer: 2018, 2019).
Head coach Sandra Worman was named the co-coach of the year in the conference for the second straight year.
Words From Coach Worman:
"I am over the moon about how the Southern Conference championships turned out. The team really showed the skills, the moxie and the resilience that they've built up over the year. Our four freshmen showed what they're made of and what they're capable of, which will be on display - and evident in the results - in the coming years. We've always known this was a building year, and today we found out just how much we've grown. A special shout out to Ashley Judson, for making the final both days, and to Gabby Morrow for making the final in air rifle today. I also want to thank the Georgia Southern infrastructure for their support in hosting a successful championship. It's a lot of moving parts and coming together for a successful experience for the student-athletes is something at which Georgia Southern excels."
