STATESBORO – Georgia Southern student-athletes had another standout year helping out in the community, finishing 12th in the NCAA Division I in community service hours logged during the 2018-19 academic year.
According to data collected via the Helper Helper platform, the Georgia Southern football team finished with the most logged hours in the country in its respective sport while the swimming & diving program finished fourth.
The Eagle baseball team led the athletic department with 8,352 hours of community involvement, followed by softball with 3,422 verified hours. Ninety-seven percent of the student-athletes at Georgia Southern participated in at least one event during the year, working with one of 39 different community organizations.
"I'm very proud of our student-athletes for the work they do on the field, in the classroom and in the community," said director of athletics Tom Kleinlein. "We continue to strive to earn rings and diplomas and build leaders who will go out and serve their communities when they leave Georgia Southern and this is a great example of the total student-athlete model we follow."
Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, partners annually to host the NCAA Team Works competition that rewards intercollegiate athletics programs that perform the most community service. During the 2018-19 academic year, student-athletes across all three NCAA divisions from 46 states tallied 474,282 hours volunteering in their respective local communities.
