Penberthy joins the Eagles from Oklahoma
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern Track and Field Head Coach Kelly Carter has announced the hiring of Wesley Penberthy as the Eagles' Assistant Coach for Distance and Cross Country. Penberthy was most recently at Oklahoma where he worked with the Sooners' distance runners as a volunteer assistant.
"We are excited to have Wesley join our program," said Head Coach Kelly Carter. "He is a driven young coach and I think he will fit in very well with our team. He comes to Statesboro with some great experience which will help boost our performance entering the new season."
Penberthy worked the 2017-18 season with the Sooners, helping the program claim 12 combined indoor and outdoor All-American performances and nine individual conference titles. The Sooner Cross Country teams placed 13th on the women's side and 14th on the men's at a strong NCAA Midwest Regional.
Prior to his move to Norman, Penberthy served as a volunteer assistant at Florida Southern College, working one season with the Mocs men's and women's distance teams.
Before he joined the Mocs, Penberthy was the head coach of cross country at Evangelical Christian School from the spring of 2013 to December of 2016. He was also the distance coach for the track team. During that time, he coached 7 individual state championships in the 400, 800, 1600 (twice), 3200 (twice), and 5k. He also led the girls cross country team to the state meet for the first time ever including a 3rd place finish. He also was an assistant on a state runner up track team in 2014.
Penberthy grew up in Fort Myers, Fla., and attended high school at Evangelical Christian School. He competed for the Gillette College Pronghorns and obtained his degree in Sport Management.
