GS Football began spring practice this afternoon
STATESBORO, Ga. – In brisk conditions and under clear skies the Georgia Southern Football team underwent their first practice of the spring. Senior slot receiver George Johnson Jr. was the first Eagle to cross the bridge at 3:49 p.m. followed closely behind by Quarterbacks Coach Juston Wood.
The team met for a break after a short calisthenics session and broke off into their position coaches. Each coach had a short period with their players, before the offense took the field to go through snap counts and limited plays. The Eagles will have 14 more practices after spring break which will include two scrimmages and the spring game. The Blue and white will resume practice following spring break on Sunday, March 18 at 7:20 p.m.
Prior to the first spring practice of the season the coordinators and some players sat down with the media to discuss the upcoming spring. Below are some quotes from the press conference.
QUOTABLES: CHAD LUNSFORD
"Right now the biggest thing that we have to do, with having new coordinators and systems, is making sure the guys know the new terminologies and getting ready to roll. As far as the effort and the work effort, we've been preaching that since January so I think the guys are ready for that. We have to continue to keep the guys in the now and not look too far ahead, with the schedule coming out and talking about practice. The guys mindset right now is probably through the roof, they are ready to hit the field and do what they came to do. The last couple weeks of training have been phenomenal, but we also were able to get their minds ready for what is to come."
QUOTABLES: SCOTT SLOAN
"This is a time of year that we have been anticipating for a long time, since getting the entire staff together and to finally get on the field and work with these guys. We had a great offseason and winter workouts in the weight room and the morning competition practices. We have been able to spend a little bit of time, as far as the NCAA allows, to get in the meeting rooms and install systems. It is exciting to get on the field and see everything in 7 on 7, rather than looking at X's and O's on the white board. What we start with today as far as who is a one, who's a two, who's a three, is mainly for organization and it allows us to be clean and figure things out efficiently. Every practice does matter since we will be installing an accountability model grading each player on the pros and cons of the practice."
QUOTABLES: BOB DEBESSE
"I think the biggest thing we want to get out of today is to communicate, making sure the coaches and everyone on the field knows what we need to do so that the Eagles win. We are going to focus a lot on the plan to win, for us in particular on offense. That means ball security. Eliminating the mistakes and miscues is a key point. I tell the offense if we can just get the play started we'll have a chance. My main focus is that they understand the importance of that. We have talked a lot of X's and O's and stressed the importance of mentality and how we operate, so today we will go out and see how we handle the snap count. If you are asking who is going to be in the huddle taking the first snap it will be Shai, but absouletly he will compete. I can tell you coach Lunsford gathered all the quarterbacks together the other day and told them just that."
