Eagle Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Clemson Opener

Scovia Ayikoru wins 400m while Merabu Nagwandala takes first in the Mile

CLEMSON, S.C. - Georgia Southern Track and Field opened the 2018-19 Indoor Season on Saturday with an outstanding performance in the Clemson Opener. The Eagles took a pair of first place finishes with freshmen Scovia Ayikoru winning the 400m and Merabu Nagwandala winning the Mile Run.
"Today was a great day for us!," said Head Coach Kelly Carter. "We have had really good fall training sessions and it showed today. We had some personal records outstanding performances to set the standard for the year. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season as we work to improve every day."
Ayikoru and Nagwandala took wins on Saturday in their debut collegiate indoor meet. The win in the 400m for Ayikoru came in the fourth fastest time in school history. Nagwandala, who excelled for the Eagle Cross Country team this fall, opened her indoor account with a win in the Mile and a fourth place finish in the 3000m. The time in the Mile was the fifth fastest in school history, while her 3000m time was good for fourth best all-time.
The distance duo of Sholonda Snell and Ellunde Montgomery claimed fourth and fifth places, respectively in the 600m. Desiree Blunt scored a fourth place finish in the 200m.
Tatiyana Rayford took fifth in the 60m Hurdles, with the fifth best time in school history. Detrich Lodge competed in a pair of events, placing fourth in the Long Jump and seventh in the 60m Hurdles.
The Eagles closed the day with a fourth place showing in the day's only relay, the 4x400m Relay. Breanna Thornton, Kamare' Ways, Meagan Lynch and Ayikoru ran the race for the Eagles.
Alexis Gant led the way for the Eagle throwers, taking fifth in the Weight Throw with the fourth longest throw in school history. She also scored an eighth place finish in the Shot Put.
The Eagles will return from holiday break on January 19 at the Wake Forest Indoor Invite on Tobacco Road. Georgia Southern travels to Birmingham, Alabama on February 8 for the Samford Indoor Invite before competing in the Sun Belt Championships on February 18-19 in Birningham.
