Co-ed squad takes first; Female squad takes third
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern cheer team won its sixth national championship, and the first in the Co-Ed division, at the National Cheerleaders Association National Championship Friday in Dayton Beach, Florida.
After nine years of coming close, the squad won its first NCA Coed Intermediate I National Championship, besting three-time national champion Michigan and East Carolina University for its first National Championship.
The team is led by senior Massey Swanson, along with a mixture of veterans and first-year cheerleaders.
"The one thing that made this team different was the energy they displayed while performing a difficult routine," said coach Barry Munkasy. "They were the last to perform because of their prior day's placement and energized the arena unlike other teams that had performed before them.?"
The Eagles' female squad took third place in the intermediate division.
