Junior kicker excited for new role this fall
"I'm excited about where we are at this point," said head coach Tyson Summers. "The guys have bought in and we've had a really good first 13 practices. I'm pleased with where we are offensively and the defense has really been good these last few practices. We need to finish strong Thursday and Friday morning, hit the weights and then come back ready to roll in July."
After practice, and right before Summers was ready to excuse the team, defensive lineman Darrius Sapp reminded the team that it was Coach Summers' birthday and the team belted out a song for the head Eagle.
Following practice, GSEagles.com had a chance to catch up with junior kicker Tyler Bass, who is looking to step in for Younghoe Koo at kicker. Bass spent last year working primarily as the kickoff specialist, but will now lead the pack of kickers into the fall in hopes of replacing the Lou Groza Award finalist.Happy Birthday to the head Eagle! ?? ?? ?? @TysonSummersGS pic.twitter.com/94TbDVgkmn

Q: With Koo being gone, how has it been stepping into the full-time kicking role?
A: It's been good. I've learned a lot from Koo and I think we've had a very good spring so far. We are still getting into the swing of things, but we have the same holder as last year and I feel that we have been clicking real well. We all are just ready for the fall.
Q: What is your range on a normal day and what is the longest you feel comfortable at?
A: Comfortable I'm good from about 60 and in, that's what I feel good with on a normal day.
Q: Did being the primary kickoff specialist help stay in a rhythm and prepare you for this season?
A: Yes, it definitely got me used to the atmosphere here on game days and controlling myself. It helped me learn to stay calm and control my adrenaline. I did well and I also got to watch Koo kick, which allowed me to get mentally prepared for the season.
Q: What's the biggest thing you have focused on this offseason being the primary kicker?
A: Staying healthy. The one thing that I want to do is keep my leg warm and loose. I just need to be ready when my name gets called.
Q: What is the longest kick you've made?
A: Longest kick that I have ever made was in practice and it was from 70 yards.
Q: What is an older song that you enjoy listening to?
A: It probably has to be Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
