Men's tennis beat USC Upstate 6-1
SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Georgia Southern men's tennis team nearly swept USC Upstate, winning 6-1 on Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina to capture their third victory in a row dating back to March 16th.
"We played against a well-coached USC Upstate team," head coach Sander Koning said. "They pushed us mentally, but fortunately we have been through so many tight and intense matches that the guys knew how to handle it."
Chris Kerrigan and Ze Moya notched the Eagles' first doubles match winning 6-4. Rise Lanne and Dani Casablancas were able to finish off the job with a 7-5 win at line one to clinch the doubles point.
"Across the board the effort was great," Sander said. "We came back from behind with doubles to take that point, and in singles the guys had to stay focused because of the rain. They had to get on and off the court a couple of times, and the guys managed their emotions well to take the match."
Eddie Landin and Andre Johnson won the first two singles matches in straight sets, but from then on, all matches spilled over to the third set. USC Upstate was able to cut the lead to two after taking the line two match from JC Alcala 7-5 in the tiebreaking set.
Dani Casablancas, Ze Moya and Rise Lanne who all hold winning streaks were able to round out the Eagles scoring. At the No.4 position, Casablancas earned his eighth win in a row to clinch the match for the Blue and White. At line three, Moya picked up the first and third sets to win his third match in a row, while Lanne came from behind to win at the No.1 position. That's his fourth W in a row and his fourteenth time this spring.
Overall, the Eagles move to 12-5 to boast a 70 percent winning record.
