Georgia Southern has not played a match since the last time they met the Trojans, a layoff of 12 days. The Eagles had to postpone last week's Sun Belt matches against Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina because of inclement weather as a result of Hurricane Matthew that hit the East Coast and Statesboro, which is 55 miles west of Savannah.
The last time Georgia Southern played the same opponent in back-to-back contests was in 2001, when the Eagles lost 3-2 to Furman at home on the last day of the regular season and topped the Paladins 3-2 in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament. GS went on to win its first SoCon Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles will also play in-state rival Georgia State in consecutive matches on the last week of the season in a home-and-home.
The Eagles are 4-3 all-time against Troy and won the first meeting of the season 3-0 at home. GS is 0-2 all-time at Troy. GS is 6-1 all-time against South Alabama and won the season's first contest 3-2 in Hanner Fieldhouse Sept. 30.
The Eagles have won their last three matches overall.
Alex Beecher was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 3 after averaging 4.62 digs and 1.75 assists per set for the week. She logged 23 digs and nine assists against South Alabama, giving her 41 career matches with 20-plus digs, and added 14 digs and five assists against Troy. Beecher ranks second in the league in digs per set and total digs. Already the school's all-time leader in digs, the redshirt senior now has 2,080 career digs, 322 shy of moving into the top-25 in NCAA history.
Katie Bange notched her sixth triple-double of the season, which ranks second in the country, with 18 kills, 10 digs, 18 assists and three blocks against South Alabama. The redshirt senior tallied 12 kills, 14 assists, six digs and two blocks vs. Troy. Bange was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Sept. 12.
The Eagles rank 34th in the country and second in the Sun Belt in aces and aces per set.
Setter Kendra Koetter has tallied a double-double in her last three matches and has five this season.
Lauren Reichard ranks second in the league in blocks with 86 and blocks per set with 1.16.
Following the weekend, Georgia Southern returns home to face UT Arlington and Texas State Oct. 21-22.
