2015 campaign starts on August 14th with friendly at The Citadel
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women's Soccer opened its 2015 preseason camp on Wednesday with two practices on campus. The team, which returned to campus for meetings on Tuesday, features 19 returners with eight newcomers. Two preseason friendliness will give the Eagles a chance to play together before the season opener on August 21st against Jacksonville.
"I felt like the returners came in and set a very high standard with their fitness level today," said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "The newcomers had a little bit of a tougher time acclimating, but that is to be expected on the first day. We expect them to get themselves up to speed as fast as possible, but the upperclassmen set the tempo today. We're excited about the first step that we have taken today, we're now focusing on improving every day."
Wednesday's sessions began with stringent fitness test before the team practiced at the Fair Road Training Facility. An afternoon training session followed as preparations for the 2015 season began. The 2015 season opener sits just 16 days away for the Eagles who went 11-6-2 in 2014 and finished third in the Sun Belt standings. Dunleavy's Eagles made a trip to the Sun Belt Tournament Semifinals with a first round win over Appalachian State, but fell to eventual champion South Alabama.
Georgia Southern's returners are highlights by a pair of all-conference performers a year ago. Melinda Lukas and Nora El-Shami each earned All-Sun Belt honors a year ago. El-Shami scored seven goals with seven assists last season, while Lukas hit on six goals including four game-winning tallies.
The Eagles will have a new face in net this year following the departure of Katie Merson who graduated this year. Emily Egan and Amanda Boyd return for their sophomore year, while newcomers Taylor Wolpe (Freshman/Cave Creek, Ariz./Chaparral H.S.) and Emily Flinn (Junior/Hillsboro, Ore./Peninsula College) join the battle for the starting job.
