STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern men's golf team gathered with friends of the program at the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center to enjoy some breakfast and watch the Division I Men's Golf NCAA Selection Show on the Golf Channel Monday morning.
The Eagles learned they will be heading to Noblesville, Indiana, for the NCAA Regionals May 14-16, where they will take on 13 other teams and five individuals at The Sagamore Club.
Playing in the Noblesville Regional field along with Georgia Southern, which is ranked 46th in the country according to Golfstat, are (Golfstat ranking): Illinois (4), Oregon (8), UCLA (15), Alabama (21), SMU (28), UNLV (32), Virginia Tech (40), Colorado (52), New Mexico State (58), East Carolina (67), Marquette (91), Alabama State (174) and Penn (204).
The Eagles make their 23rd appearance in the NCAA Championships, the 12th under director of golf Larry Mays and the sixth in men's coach Carter Collins' eight-year tenure as a member of the coaching staff. Georgia Southern secured the Sun Belt Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by winning the league's team title April 21.
"I've heard nothing but great things about the course," said Collins. "It has some long holes on it, but we have good length on the team. The field looks very solid, as all the fields do, but we're not focused on what other teams are there, we're focused on being the most prepared we can be and make sure we're playing our best."
The Noblesville Regional is one of six in the country. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 29-June 3, hosted by South Florida. The Eagles are seeded eighth in their regional.
"It's what we expect – a good, solid field," said senior Scott Wolfes, who will play in the NCAA Regionals for the third straight year. "We'll be ready to go for anything that comes our way and see if we can get it done."
The 30 teams and six individuals who advance from the regional sites will compete in an individual stroke-play format for 54 holes (May 29-31). The top 40 individuals and ties will compete in the fourth and final stroke-play round to determine the individual national champion June 1, and on June 2 (quarterfinals and semi-finals) and June 3 (finals), the low eight teams from the 54-hole qualifying will compete in match-play competition to determine the team national champion.
"We're excited to make another trip to the NCAA Regionals," said Mays, who is in his fourth and final year on the NCAA Men's Golf Committee, which selects and seeds the participants. "It's the toughest tournament all year. You have to play well to move on and advance, and we're looking forward to the challenge."
Monday's selection show was just the start of coverage of the 2015 Division I Men's Golf Championship by the Golf Channel. The network will provide highlights from regional play leading up to coverage of the 2015 championship. Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the final day of individual championship play June 1 as well as the team match play June 2-3.
