2015 Volleyball Schedule
STATESBORO, Ga. – Matches against in-state opponents Georgia and Georgia Tech, a four-team home tournament, the first meeting against Florida Gulf Coast and a 16-match Sun Belt slate highlight the Georgia Southern volleyball schedule, announced today by coach Dustin Wood.
In addition, Hanner Fieldhouse will serve as the site of the 2015 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship Nov. 20-22. The top-8 teams in the regular-season standings advance to the league tournament.
"We are excited about our 2015 schedule and Georgia Southern hosting the Sun Belt Volleyball Championships," said Wood. "We have a great non-conference slate this season, opening up the season at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, and then playing at Georgia on a Thursday night followed by Georgia Tech the next day."
The Eagles open the season with consecutive tournaments on the road as they travel to the Florida Atlantic Invitational and to Athens for the Georgia Cup, featuring in-state opponents Kennesaw State, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
The Georgia Southern University Tournament returns to Hanner Fieldhouse Sept. 11-12, with Tennessee State, Winthrop and Chicago State coming to town. Home contests against Savannah State Sept. 15, and Florida Gulf Coast Sept. 25, round out the non-conference slate. The Eagles open Sun Belt play at home against defending champion UALR Sept. 18, and play their first three league matches in Statesboro as part of an eight-match homestand.
Instead of a 20-match conference schedule, the Sun Belt moved to 16 conference matches, and Georgia Southern will play UALR, ULM, Arkansas State, Georgia State, UT Arlington and Appalachian State twice this season and meet the other four conference teams once.
"The Sun Belt schedule will be different this year, making it easier on our players with travel," said Wood. "It's a great conference and was ranked in the top-10 in the country in RPI last season. We are grateful to Tom Kleinlein (director of athletics) and Jeff Blythe (senior associate athletic director) for giving us the opportunity to host the Sun Belt Championship in Hanner Fieldhouse, and we are looking forward to competing this season with everyone healthy."
Georgia Southern returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2014 team. Starters Katie Bange, Alex Beecher and Crysten Curry all missed significant time in the fall with injuries and redshirted the season. The Eagles wrapped up their spring with a 3-0 record, capped by a five-set home victory over Georgia.
