Georgia Southern returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2014 team
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team wrapped up its spring with a 3-0 record, capped by a five-set victory over Georgia in Hanner Fieldhouse last Thursday.
Georgia Southern returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from the 2014 team. Starters Katie Bange, Alex Beecher and Crysten Curry all missed significant time in the fall with injuries and redshirted the season. Having them back made the spring a lot more fun for head coach Dustin Wood.
"Beecher is a game changer; it's great to have her back," said Wood. "Katie has gotten back to the basics, and Crysten came on as we moved through the spring."
Curry posted seven kills and nine blocks in the match against UGA, while Beecher had 23 digs. Bange added six kills, and Megan Chevalier had nine kills and four blocks. Catherine Murray led the squad with 13 kills.
"Megan has a lot more pop on the ball, and is becoming more dynamic," said Wood. "Cat also worked on the fundamentals, and that's been the key to her improvement."
Wood and the coaching staff spent a bulk of the non-traditional season adjusting the offense, and the Eagles are getting more comfortable with it each day. That was a key in the match against Georgia as the Eagles were able to keep the Bulldogs off balance.
"We got a chance to tinker with different offensive systems, and the girls are really starting to get it now," said Wood. "It was a great way to cap the spring and head into the fall."
