Eagles set to play strong schedule including second season in Sun Belt
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern head softball coach Annie Smith has released the Eagles' 2016 schedule, featuring five tournaments and 56 total contests including four Southeastern Conference dates, 18 home games and a full Sun Belt Conference slate.
"Our 2016 schedule is a really good, solid schedule from start to finish that will test us but also make us better," said Smith. "During the early portion of the season, we play some very good teams and that will set us up very well for our Sun Belt Conference schedule. The team and I are very excited to get to work and to play at some new locations this season, as well. It will also be great to be able to play on national television when we play the SEC schools."
When the Eagles take on SEC foes Mississippi State, Georgia, Texas A&M and South Carolina, the SEC Network will televise the games.
The five tournaments the Eagles will play in include the Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Mississippi, to start the season, the EMU (Eastern Michigan University) Madeira Beach Invitational held in Madeira Beach, Florida, the Coastal Carolina Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, their own Eagle Classic in Statesboro and the Texas Tech Tournament held in Lubbock, Texas.
The season begins Feb. 11-13 when Georgia Southern travels to the Bulldog Kickoff Classic where the Eagles will take on Mississippi State on the opening day. They will then play Tennessee Tech and Alabama A&M the next day and wrap up their time in Starkville with a pair of games against Tennessee Tech and Houston.
The Eagles' next tournament will be the EMU Madeira Beach Invite Feb. 19-21 hosted by Eastern Michigan. Georgia Southern starts that tournament off against North Florida and Providence on Feb. 19. They then play Marist and Villanova on the 20th and cap the weekend off against UMASS-Lowell on Feb. 21.
Before traveling to their third tournament, the Eagles will begin their home slate by hosting Kennesaw State for a 6 p.m. game on Feb. 23.
The team then heads to South Carolina for the Coastal Carolina Tournament in Myrtle Beach. The Eagles will play five games between Feb. 26 through 28, including Iowa and host school Coastal Carolina.
The second-to-last tournament for the Eagles will be their own Eagle Classic March 4-6. Georgia Southern will play North Dakota in a pair of games on the 4th and 5th and then take on Harvard and Eastern Kentucky to close out the weekend.
The Eagles will follow up the Eagle Classic by heading to the Lonestar State for a week and-a-half swing starting with opening conference play in San Marcos, Texas, at Texas State. The Eagles will take on the Bobcats in three games including a doubleheader on March 12 and a single game on March 13.
The Eagles then travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M in a March 15 doubleheader before traveling to Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech Tournament March 17-19. While in Lubbock, Georgia Southern will take on host Texas Tech on the opening day, then play a pair of games against Boise State on the 18th and 19th before taking on Texas Tech again on the 19th.
Once back from Texas, Georgia Southern will travel to Athens for the annual meeting with the Bulldogs of Georgia on March 23.
Following 10 straight road games, the Eagles will finally get to play at home for five straight games as they welcome their next Sun Belt opponent to town in Texas Arlington March 25 and 26. The three-game tilt with the Mavericks will include a doubleheader on the 26th. The five-game home stand will end with the Eagles hosting Jacksonville for a doubleheader on March 30.
Georgia Southern opens the month of April up in Monroe, Louisiana, where it will take on the University of Louisiana Monroe in a doubleheader on April 2 and a single game on the 3rd.
The Eagles then return home for a six-game SBC home stand against Appalachian State and South Alabama. The Mountaineers will be first to come to Statesboro, April 9 and 10 with the doubleheader coming on the 9th while the Cougars will come to Statesboro on April 16 and 17.
Another six-game road swing will be next for the Eagles as they travel to SEC opponent South Carolina on April 19 and then travel to Troy, Alabama, for a three-game tilt against the Trojans of Troy. The doubleheader will be the 23rd with the single game coming on the 24th. The Eagles close out the road swing with a doubleheader at Savannah State on April 27.
The final home stand of the season will allow Georgia Southern to close out the month of April and commence the month of May against UL Lafayette. The two programs will start the three-game series with a doubleheader on April 30 and the single game will be on May 1.
The final regular-season matchup will be a road game at in-state rival Georgia State on May 6 and 7. The single game will be on the 6th while the Eagles and Panthers will play the doubleheader on May 7 to close out the regular season.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held May 11-14 in Mobile Alabama, and this year's Women's College World Series will take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
