Office of Student-Athlete Services sets lofty goal for Eagles
STATESBORO, Ga. - This past summer, the Georgia Southern Office of Student-Athlete Services started a "Road to a 3.0" Campaign in an effort to get Eagle student-athletes to consistently achieve a 3.0 for the academic year. The athletic department has come close in the past few years, but Reggie Simpkins, Director of Student-Athlete Services and his crew has set a goal for entire athletic department for the entire academic year: a department-wide GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Here's a breakdown of the past five academic years at Georgia Southern for its athletics department:
2014-15: 2.94
2013-14: 2.95
2012-13: 2.97
2011-12: 2.96
2010-11: 2.88
"The Road to a 3.0" is something that we begin speaking with our athletes about this summer," Simpkins said. "This message has been consistent and we feel that if we want things to occur then we have to speak them into existence. Many of our athletes are excited about the opportunity to be the first group to achieve the 3.0. We have taken a different approach in how we recruit tutors; we have increased the number of required study hall hours; and we have been able to add some very talented staff members to work with our athletes. We are making sure that our students are not only able to compete in their sport but also in the classroom as well. Student Athlete Services is blessed in that our president and provost are passionate about enhancing the academics of our student athletes, while our athletic director understands the importance as well because he has worked in this area in the past.
"The poster was an idea that we came up with after seeing all the excitement when team posters were being unleashed at the beginning of the fall semester. I do know that Student Athlete Service departments across the country have done staff pictures but the not the poster concept with dates and academic opponents listed. I do believe that we are the first in the country to do this. Jeremy Wilburn, with marketing and communications, did an excellent job on putting this piece together for us."
