Eagles to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer
STATESBORO, Ga. - Each year, Zeta Tau Alpha chapters across the nation host Think Pink and Pink Out games with their university athletic departments to raise awareness for breast cancer. They host these events to benefit their philanthropy Breast Cancer Education and Awareness in order to help raise awareness and educate women of the risks of breast cancer. Supporters hope that increasing knowledge will lead to earlier detection, which is in turn related to higher survival rates.
The American Cancer Society determined in 2015 that breast cancer affects one in eight women and about 40,290 women will die each year from the disease. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and members of Zeta Tau Alpha work strenuously to increase awareness and raising funds to help with research and early detection. One of the most famous breast cancer symbols is the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness.
For Thursday's game against Texas State, members of the Georgia Southern University Zeta Tau Alpha chapter will be handing out pink ribbons in the stadium throughout the game. Their goal is to have every person in the stadium wearing the pink ribbon to show their support for survivors and those currently fighting breast cancer. Members will also be selling t-shirts displaying the pink ribbon and all proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. Inside Paulson Stadium, fans will be able to sign a large pink ribbon in honor of someone they know who has been affected.
Emily Morrow, Zeta Tau Alpha's Think Pink Athletic Chairman, has been working hand-in-hand with the athletic department to prepare for the Tackling For A Cure game.
"Our chapter has been working to promote awareness and get people excited to come to the game," Morrow said. "We hope to pin every attendant with a pink ribbon to show their support in honor of those women affected. We are ready to make an impact by packing Paulson Stadium and wearing our pink ribbons."
Zeta Tau Alpha partners with many organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, Bright Pink and the National Football League just to name a few. Their partnership with the NFL has allowed them to partner with 32 teams and distribute thousands of pink ribbons at those games. Zeta Tau Alpha's partnership with the NFL has also earned them the title of official fan outreach partner for the NFL's "A Crucial Catch" campaign.
