Eagles travel to South Alabama for first-ever Sun Belt Conference game

Here are some facts and figures about the Georgia Southern Football team as the Eagles head into a historic weekend for their first-ever Sun Belt Conference game. The Eagles face South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday, September 20th with the game on ESPN3. Kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Eastern/6:30 p.m. Central.

In a year of firsts, Saturday's game at South Alabama will mark the Eagles' first-ever Sun Belt Conference game as well as their first against South Alabama, one of five first-time opponents on the 2014 schedule.

With nearly 200 yards rushing in the second half against Georgia Tech, the Eagles moved up a spot in the national rankings in team rushing offense. Georgia Southern (364.3.yards per game) is second only to Navy (403 ypg).

Each of the Eagles' first three games have seen three different leading rushers and receivers. Kevin Ellison (N.C. State, 116), Brandan Thomas (Savannah State, 117) and Matt Breida (Georgia Tech, 111) have crossed the 100-yard rushing mark. B.J. Johnson had the most yards on his single catch vs. Georgia Tech (68) with Kentrellis Showers posting 91 (3 catches) vs. Savannah State and Zach Walker with 84 (5 catches) at N.C. State.

Junior linebacker Antwione Williams, who missed the 2013 season with an injury, registered a game-high and career-best 10 total tackles against Georgia Tech Saturday. Williams leads the Eagles with 20 on the year.

Number of touchdowns by the Eagles so far in 2014 with 15 coming on the ground and four through the air. Sophomore Matt Breida has five rushing TDs, most of any player in the Sun Belt Conference.

Georgia Southern's 20.63 average yards per pass completion ranks at the top of the NCAA FBS statistics. So far this season, nine of the Eagles' plays of 25 or more yards have been pass plays. Saturday's 68-yard touchdown catch by B.J. Johnson from Kevin Ellison was the longest since 2012 (75 yards, Zach Walker from Jerick McKinnon).

With 27 receptions on the year in three games, Georgia Southern is more than halfway to its total of 52 for all of 2013. Senior Zach Walker has 11 to lead the wide receiving corps while senior Kentrellis Showers has the most touchdown receptions so far with three.

Sun Belt Offensive Co-Player of the Week Kevin Ellison directed the Eagles to four-straight touchdown drives in the second half, beginning the scoring spree with his own 32-yard TD run to cap a 75-yard drive. Georgia Southern followed with drives of 85, 83 and a season-long 94 yards to take the lead over the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter.

Georgia Southern's third quarter offensive production against Georgia Tech was stunning – three touchdowns and 228 yards of total offense. The Eagles averaged 12.0 yards per play in the period and finished with a Sun Belt-best single-game 8.8 yards per-play average.

Eagle Nation was loud enough to hear on TV and Coach Fritz commented that "at times, I felt it was a home game," as the 53,173 attendance was the largest for a non-conference, non-Georgia game at Bobby Dodd Stadium since a Sept. 2, 2006 game vs. Notre Dame.
