Thirteenth-annual event held at Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Tuesday
MACON, Ga. – Georgia Southern Head Coach Willie Fritz addressed members of the media contingent in attendance at the Pigskin Preview at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame today, providing insight to his first five months on the job and the program's transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Today's event at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon was the 13th annual event, gathering every football coach from every college program across the state to visit with media members.
"This was a really neat event here today at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, having the opportunity to meet all the college coaches in the state of Georgia and getting to meet media throughout the state," said Eagle Head Coach Willie Fritz. "We are excited about the opportunity to move up a level, learn about our players on a daily basis and look forward to competing in the Sun Belt Conference."
Georgia Southern will play seven games in the state of Georgia with five at the newly expanded Paulson Stadium and two in Atlanta against Georgia Tech (Saturday, Sept. 13) and Georgia State (Saturday, Oct. 25). The Eagles' 2014 home opener is set for Saturday, September 6th against Savannah State. Less than 60 days remain until the Eagles report for preseason camp on July 30th and less than 90 days remain until Georgia Southern kicks off August 30th at Atlantic Coast Conference opponent N.C. State.
Even without games or practices, summertime is hardly a down time for Fritz and the Georgia Southern coaching staff. Coaches can meet with players on a limited basis this summer, a change from previous NCAA bylaws, with coaches also making a major commitment to recruiting future Eagles.
"A big part of making this move up is that our recruiting is much more intensified, so we're watching a lot of tape, evaluating a lot of guys and we'll be having our one day camps throughout the state of Georgia beginning this upcoming Monday," Fritz said. " We're also making sure we're working with our guys on campus and doing our practice scripts and schedules for preseason camp as well."
Making the move with its first FBS season, the Georgia Southern Football program will also be moving its headquarters across campus into the new Football Operations Center located in the east endzone of Paulson Stadium. More than 500 Eagle fans previewed the new mid-deck and North Stands last Saturday and Coach Fritz had a chance to check on the progress of the new facility.
"We just can't wait to get in there and get acclimated to our new surroundings prior to our report date July 30th," Fritz commented.
