STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern volleyball coach Dustin Wood announced today that Meg Bright (Kennesaw, Ga./Emanuel/Air Force), Ashley Jones (Marietta, Ga./Carlton J. Kell) and Bernetta Moore (Greensboro, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy/George Mason) have joined the program and will be eligible to compete in the upcoming 2014 season.
A 6-foot-4 middle, Bright hit .339 with 398 kills and posted 103 blocks last season at NAIA Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs Georgia. The junior was a 2011 first-team all-state selection at Harrison High School, leading her team to the final four in 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2011.
"Meg has the size at middle and experience at a high level which will add depth at that position for us this season," said Wood. "We are excited to work with Meg to make her better. She is already here preparing for the upcoming season, and we are confident she will make big strides this year."
A 6-foot outside hitter, Jones was a two-year all-area selection under coach Lauren Hines at Carlton J. Kell High School. The freshman earned all-county accolades in 2013 after leading her team in kills, digs, blocks and aces. Her father, George, played offensive tackle at Georgia Southern from 1985-89, and her two sisters, Amanda and Anna, played volleyball at Armstrong Atlantic.
"Ashley has the potential to develop into a solid outside hitter for us," said Wood. "She has great ball control and will learn a lot this year from being in a competitive gym environment and learning our system."
A 5-foot-8 libero, Moore led the Atlantic-10 in digs per set last season (4.3), posted double-digit digs in all but two matches and logged 43 assists. The junior ranked fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in digs as a freshman and earned CAA Player of the Week honors once. She was second on the team in aces and notched 40 assists for the season.
"Bernetta is seasoned and has played at a high level already," said Wood. "Her work ethic, leadership and knowledge will help her when she steps on the court for us. She's a gamer and will come to play each and every practice and match. She will help our program immediately."
The trio are part of a group of six newcomers joining the Eagle roster. Liat Hackman (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) and Cathrine Murray (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) are incoming freshmen and Isabella Zaliagiris (Conover, N.C./Newton-Conover/George Mason) transferred in as a sophomore prior to the spring semester.
Georgia Southern won the 2013 Southern Conference Tourney Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 28-6 record, which tied the most wins in school history. Georgia Southern returns seven letterwinners and six starters to the 2014 squad, which will compete in the Eagles' inaugural season in the Sun Belt.
