
Walker Claims Third SoCon Outdoor Long Jump Title

Track & Field sits in fifth after first day of competition
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior Jasmin Walker claimed her third straight Southern Conference Outdoor Long Jump title and extended the string of Eagle champions in that event to 10. Walker recorded a personal best 6.12m (20'1") to take the crown with a distance that ranks second all-time on Georgia Southern's top performance list. Georgia Southern currently sits in fifth after six scored finals on the first day of competition at the Viking Athletic Complex.
Georgia Southern returns to conference championship action at 10 a.m. Sunday morning with the three remaining events in the Heptathlon. The Shot Put begins at 12 p.m. with racing events for the women set to begin at 1:10 p.m. with the 4X100m Relay. Fourteen individuals advanced to their finals on Sunday in seven events and other seven events are contested as finals Sunday.
Four Eagles return to the finals in the 100m Dash and three in the 200m Dash on Sunday. Aarian Tipton had the top times in both preliminary events for Georgia Southern, and the second-best times in program history with personal bests times of 11.70 in the 100m and 23.96 in the 200m. Walker and Jordan Fordham join Tipton in the 200m and Alyssa Felton ran a personal best to reach the finals in the 100m Dash.
Senior Dana Edwards will compete in both the 100m and 400m Hurdles finals, posting a personal best 14.58 in the 100m Hurdles events. Felton recorded a PR of 14.33 in the 100m Hurdles and moves to the final eight in her first year competing in this event. Freshman Asha Stegall and senior Cherrelle King represent Georgia Southern in Sunday's final 400m race. King ran a personal best, her fastest time since spring 2012, to advance.
Sherril McFarlane reset her own University record in the 1500m topping her previous personal best with a 4:40.47. She returns to the finals in both the 1500m and the 800m events Sunday.
Freshman Kelsey Arnold threw a personal best 48.47m in the Hammer for the fourth-best distance in Georgia Southern history. Her sixth-place finish earned three points for the Eagles. Felton added points to the first-day total with a seventh-place finish in the Long Jump.
After four events, Ashleigh Rasheed is in third place in the Heptathlon with the Long Jump, Javelin and 800m Run to be contested Sunday. Rasheed finished second in the 100m Hurdles and took third in the High Jump, Shot Put, and 200m Dash Saturday morning.
