TO SCORE OR NOT TO SCORE
Standard scoring will not apply to Saturday's Blue-White Scrimmage – in fact, after the two-minute drills in the first session, the scoreboard will read 0-0. After eight plays of the field goal team vs. field goal blocking unit and four plays of punt team vs. punt block unit, the Eagles will have four sessions of situations.
The first session is designed to simulate a two-minute drill with the purpose of scoring to tie or win with two minutes – or less – on the clock and the ball at offense's 31-yard line. Both the first and second teams will participate in this drill.
The second session begins with the football at the offense's 35 with six plays for the first, second or third team to move the ball downfield. In session three, the ball is placed at midfield with the first, second and third teams again receiving six plays to find the endzone. The fourth session has the same format, with the ball placed at the defense's 30-yard line. Sessions 2-4 will each repeat for a second set of reps for each group in that specific situation.

FIRST SEASON FOR FRITZ
Willie Fritz, named the ninth head coach in Georgia Southern history on January 10th, begins his first season as head coach of the Eagles in 2014. The Shawnee Mission, Kansas, native, will celebrate his 30th year on the sidelines and begins his 22nd year as a head coach. Fritz owns a 176-67-1 (.723) overall record with two NJCAA national championships (Blinn College, 1995 & 1996) and most recently, two appearances in the NCAA FCS championship game in 2011 and 2012.
EXPERIENCED COACHING STAFF
With 182 years of combined full-time coaching years, this Georgia Southern coaching staff is the most experienced in the history of the program. Fritz and both his coordinators, Jack Curtis (Defense) and Doug Ruse (Offense), have more than two decades on the sidelines.
BUT WE'RE NOT COUNTING
From Saturday's Blue-White Spring Game to the Eagles' home opener in the newly expanded Paulson Stadium, there are 147 days and approximately six hours until kickoff.
WECOME COMMISSIONER BENSON: Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson and Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein observed some of Georgia Southern's practice Thursday afternoon practice on the banks of "Beautiful Eagle Creek." Commissioner Benson is in Statesboro to visit with Eagle student-athletes, administrators, coaches and staff and take in Saturday's scrimmage at Paulson Stadium and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 4:30 p.m. Eagle Baseball game.
MAKING THE MOVE
A number of Eagles have changed positions this spring, notably the move of Nardo Govan from running back to tight end, Tray Butler returning to his original wide receiver position, Quaun Daniels going up front from linebacker to defensive end.
30 YEARS OF PAULSON STADIUM
The dedication of Allen E. Paulson Stadium on September 29, 1984 was a fitting end to years of planning and hard work as the Georgia Southern Football program built one of the finest football facilities in America. Thirty years later, there have been major changes with the recent construction of a new mid-deck, adding more than 6,000 additional seats and a new 50,000-square foot Football Operations Center in the east endzone. The $10 million Stadium expansion project is student-fee funded with private donations making possible the Eagle Football team's new headquarters.
One thing hasn't changed – winning. Georgia Southern has a remarkable 176-33 home record (84.2 winning percentage) at Paulson Stadium and has won 91.7 percent of its postseason games (33-3).
INJURED EAGLES
Seven Eagles are currently on the injury list and not participating in spring practices: RB Matt Breida, OL Logan Daves, DE Rafael Hardee, DE Lennie Richardson, S Deion Stanley, S Loy Waters and WR Ezayi Youyoute.
FIRST EVENT IN PAULSON STADIUM: Georgia Southern produced a promo video for the upcoming concert at Paulson Stadium featuring Lady Antebellum with special guests Joe Nichols and Kristian Bush on May 2nd. Coach Willie Fritz (0;55), Eagle defensive lineman Jamal Johnson and Defensive Line Coach Kevin Peoples (2:14) helped out with the fun lip dub video after practice earlier this week. TWICE AS NICE
Two Georgia Southern home football contests have been selected for national television broadcast, requiring both the Appalachian State and Troy games to move to Thursday nights. The Eagles and Mountaineers will be featured as the first non-Saturday matchup between Sun Belt Conference opponents as the rivals will play on September 25th on ESPNU. Georgia Southern will now welcome Troy to Paulson Stadium on October 30th, another game slated for broadcast on ESPNU.
Kickoff times for both Thursday games will be announced at a later date by the network.
