Two Home Football Contests Selected for National Television Broadcast

Eagles’ Games vs. Appalachian State and Troy Move to Thursday Nights

NEW ORLEANS & BRISTOL, Conn. -- Two Georgia Southern home football contests have been selected for national television broadcast, requiring both the Appalachian State and Troy games to move to Thursday nights. The Eagles and Mountaineers will be featured as the first non-Saturday matchup between Sun Belt Conference opponents as the rivals will play on September 25th on ESPNU. Georgia Southern will now welcome Troy to Paulson Stadium on October 30th, another game slated for broadcast on ESPNU.
Kickoff times for both Thursday games will be announced at a later date by the network.
"The opportunity to showcase our Football program, new facilities and Georgia Southern University before millions of fans across the country is just one of the benefits of being a member of the Sun Belt Conference," said Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein. "The fact that two of our games were picked for a national TV audience is a statement about the success of our Football program, the passion of Eagle Nation and the growth of our University. These are exciting times in Statesboro."
Georgia Southern's first non-Saturday game at home, a rainy Thursday night, September 21, 1989, better known as the "Hugo Bowl," was also the first to welcome a national television audience to Paulson Stadium. That game, aired on ESPN, featured a halftime studio report from new anchor Chris Fowler.
All six of Georgia Southern's national championship games were broadcast nationally, five by ESPN with the 1990 game in Statesboro on CBS. The last three NCAA three semifinal playoff games in which the Eagles participated placed the program on ESPNU and ESPN2 twice. Fifty Georgia Southern games in the last decade, both home and away, have been broadcast by national, regional or local entities with the last national broadcast originating from Paulson Stadium in 2004.
Season tickets are on sale now for Georgia Southern's inaugural season in the Sun Belt Conference and FBS. The Eagles kick off their 2014 campaign and unveil the newly expanded Paulson Stadium at 6 p.m. on September 6th.
