Eagles look to sharpen their performances this weekend
STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Georgia Southern Track and Field team heads to Jacksonville and the University of North Florida this weekend to compete in the UNF Spring Break Invitational. Held at the site of the NCAA East Regional qualifier, the two-day meet is set for Friday-Saturday, March 28-29th at Hodges Stadium. Field events begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with the Hammer Throw with racing events beginning at 2 p.m. with preliminaries for the 100m Hurdles.
Twenty-two Eagles will make the short trip to Jacksonville with 13 events on the docket for Friday with finals and the 4X100m and 4X400m Relays contested on Saturday. Live results will be available on halfmiletiming.com.
"We want to continue to produce fast times and solid performances," said Head Track and Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "We are still training hard and work on our chemistry for the 4X100. We'll have a lot of our Eagles competing in several events this weekend. With this much heavy racing, we expect to run fast and still see that mental toughness. We want to come out healthy and be prepared to compete the next week."
Sherril McFarlane, who broke Georgia Southern's record in the 1500m last week at the FSU Relays will look for another record this weekend, this time in the 400m race. McFarlane will join freshman Asha Stegall, who posted a top-five time in the event in Tallahassee.
The Eagles usual complement of sprinters are prepared to dominate at Hodges Stadium after gaining some confidence last weekend. Jasmin Walker tied for the third-fastest time in Georgia Southern history with an 11.77 in the 100m race and Dana Edwards moved up a notch in the 400m Hurdles. In addition to top times for the Eagles, the 4X400m Relay earned a national ranking with the third-fastest time in the program's history in just the first competition of the outdoor season.
Off the track, a full slate of field events awaits with the Eagles competing with all four implements: Hammer, Shot Put, Discus and Javelin. Stephanne Henzler broke into the top five all-time with her 47.51m distance in the Hammer Throw to open the outdoor season at the Palmetto Classic and has another chance to improve upon that mark.
After this weekend's meet at North Florida, the Eagles return to the Sunshine State for the Florida Relays April 3rd and 4th.
"Everyone is further ahead of where we were this time last year," Mincey said. "We want to have everyone go out and make improvements in technique or race strategy, wherever we can get an advantage. We are still a young team, but it's great to see them mature and recognize where they have developed an attitude of excellence – they now know when something isn't how it needs to be and they make their own corrections. I'm excited about where we are right now."
