STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track and Field team finished up its pre-meet practice Thursday afternoon and travels today to their final Southern Conference Indoor Championships held this Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2. The event, which begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Women's Pentathlon, is free and open to the public at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Live results will be available throughout the weekend at timinginc.com and will be posted on Georgia Southern's social media channels with a recap at the conclusion of each day.
"We are going to this last Southern Conference indoor championship and we are going to compete hard," said Track and Field Coach Marlo Mincey, a 2004 SoCon indoor champion in the 400m Dash. "We want everyone who puts on a Georgia Southern uniform to go out there and do their best. We talked as a staff and our assistants have done a get job to get everyone ready in each area. We believe in what we are doing and have followed our plan from the beginning of the year, day in, day out, month in and month out, until we get to the championships. We're at that point and we're ready."
Twenty-one women will compete in the first day's events with five trials in the racing events, three final field events and the Pentathlon. Georgia Southern has 10 Eagles in the top five of the current individual Southern Conference rankings and enters this weekend fourth in the power rankings released by the league office.
Georgia Southern should take advantage of its strengths in the sprints, jumps and mult-events during the two-day meet. Southern Conference champion in the Long Jump, Alyssa Felton, looks to defend her title as one of six Eagles competing in the event. Georgia Southern has won the Long Jump four of the last five years and for the last three years.
Twelve Eagles, nine returning, scored points as they advanced to the finals in last year's championship. Four competed in the 60m Dash finals, the highest number of Eagle student-athletes ever to qualify in that event. Junior Jasmin Walker, who won the 2012 Long Jump, was on the podium for that event in 2013 and also qualified for the 60m and 200m finals. She ran her personal best of 7.60 at this same facility two weeks ago and that time ranks fourth in Georgia Southern history.
Sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed scored 3,076 points in the Pentathlon last year at the SoCon for a total that ranks fifth all-time in program history and placed third in the Triple Jump. Her distance of 12.09m recorded at the beginning of February at the Samford Multi and Invitational would have won the 2013 event. Graduate student Sherril McFarlane competes in the 800m, where she has already set and reset her own record, but looks to lower the time again in her first SoCon indoor championship,
A resurgence in the throwing events puts freshman Kelsey Arnold, poised to break the 11-year-old Georgia Southern record in the Weight Throw. Senior Ashley Thomas and newcomer Stephanne Henzler have put up numbers in practice that could earn the Eagles points this weekend. Arnold and Thomas will finish their championship weekend also throwing the Shot Put.
This is the second time the Eagles have traveled to Winston-Salem to compete this season. Two weeks ago, Georgia Southern had the opportunity to preview the venue and with the winter passing through, faced additional high-quality competition from ACC schools that decided to compete closer to home that weekend.
