First time two Football Eagles have landed honors in same year since 1995
AUSTIN, Texas – Georgia Southern student-athletes Matt Dobson and Garrett Frye were today named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Football second team. It is a first appearance for both Eagles on the national academic All-America team with Frye earning All-District honors previously in 2013. Individuals must have had a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and be a starter or key reserve to be nominated and Dobson and Frye advanced to the national team after being selected to one of eight all-district teams.
The Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Both 12-game starters for the Eagles, Frye was a member of the Capital One Academic All-America All-District team in 2013. Both are first-time selections to the national All-America team second team.
Frye started 37 straight games at offensive tackle for the Eagles helping the offense post the highest rushing average in the nation and record the second- (613) and fourth-highest single game (564) rushing totals this year. Georgia Southern ran for a Sun Belt record 55 touchdowns and 4,573 yards, also a record. He maintained a 3.77 cumulative grade point average in Exercise Science. Frye, from Cumming, Ga., is a two-time selection as Georgia Southern University's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
From Monticello, Fla., Dobson, a two-year starter at safety, has a 3.73 GPA in History and made his first appearance on the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District Team earlier this year. The junior has three interceptions on the season, two returned for touchdowns. His 100-yard interception return for a touchdown at Texas State ties the record for longest play in Georgia Southern history and he now has the longest interception return in Sun Belt Conference play. His pass breakup in the final seconds of the season finale vs. ULM saved a potential game-winning touchdown.
Moriah Bellissimo, a Volleyball student-athlete, was the most recent Georgia Southern Eagle selected to a Capital One Academic All-America team with her honors coming in 2012. Voncellies Allen, who was a first-team pick in 1999 after landing on the second team in 1998, was the Eagles' last football representative.
