STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Student Government Association hosted a pep rally, "Celebrate the Journey," commending the achievements of Eagle athletics programs Wednesday on campus in front of the University Store.
Georgia Southern University President Dr. Brooks Keel, Statesboro mayor Jan Moore and the SGA all made presentations to Eagle Athletics.
Moore read a Proclamation by the mayor and city council of Statesboro declaring Dec. 10, 2014, "Eagle Football Day, recognizing the outstanding achievements of coach Willie Fritz and the Georgia Southern football team."
The Eagles became just the third team to win a conference title in their first year of FBS participation and one of three teams to go undefeated in conference play in 2014, joining Florida State and Ohio State.
"I'm all about first so I could not be any more excited to be standing here today," Moore said. "How awesome was that – that we kicked everybody's tail in the Sun Belt Conference?"
Senior linebacker Edwin Jackson accepted the proclamation on behalf of the football team.
"It's been an incredible journey coming from the SoCon to the Sun Belt," he said. "The goal here is winning, and I hope to pass that along to the next generation - to win for Eagle Nation and to put Georgia Southern on top, where it belongs. A lot of people didn't understand who Georgia Southern is. Well, they know now."
Dr. Keel began the festivities by presenting "The Key to Eagle Nation" to the Eagle football team.
"I'm proud of what this football team has accomplished and how this football team has put this University on a national stage so quickly," said Keel. "We knew all along that we'd be successful, but I don't think anybody really envisioned just how successful we'd be and what impact that success has on this University."
Keel also gave special thanks to the 22 senior members of the football team who made the sacrifice of continuing their commitment to Georgia Southern despite not being able to compete for an FCS National Championship in 2013 and not being eligible for a bowl in 2014 as Georgia Southern completed its NCAA-mandated two-year transitional period.
SGA President Azell Francis wrapped up the event with a round of thanks to everybody who made the pep rally possible and to the Georgia Southern student-athletes.
"We wanted to thank all the student-athletes for representing Georgia Southern University at the highest level of competition every time you go out there," she said. "You truly make me extremely proud to say I am the Student Body President at Georgia Southern."
