INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two Georgia Southern Athletics teams posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) above the national average, and seven sports improved their GSR from the previous data set in the 2004-2007 Cohort released by the NCAA on Tuesday.
The women's basketball team and the women's tennis team both bested the Division I average. The women's tennis team posted a perfect 100 GSR, while women's basketball graduated 86 percent of their student-athletes.
Nine sports either remained even or showed improvement over the 2003-2006 Cohort. The baseball and swimming and diving teams both increased their GSR by 11 percent. Swimming and diving also nearly reached the national average and finished one percent short with a 91 GSR.
"Supporting student-athlete success in the classroom is at the heart of our Association, and today's announcement shows progress toward that goal that is nothing short of remarkable," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "We are delighted to see a record percentage of student-athletes achieve graduation, the ultimate goal of entering college."
The football team posted a three percent improvement over the 2003-2006 Cohort, while the men's basketball team improved seven percent.
The NCAA Graduation Success Rate is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree. The GSR takes into account incoming transfers who graduate from a different institution than the one they started at and transfers who leave an institution in good standing.
