STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Track & Field team returns to the Birmingham Crossplex for its first meet of the new year Friday and Saturday, January 10th and 11th, at the UAB Blazer Invitational. Eighteen Eagles representing Georgia Southern will join a list of approximately 20 collegiate teams, including several Southeastern Conference schools. Friday's events begin at 4:30 p.m. ET with the Weight Throw and a 5 p.m. ET start for the preliminaries of the 60m Hurdles.
The Eagles returned to practice on campus last week after training at home during the holiday break.
"We want to see where we are performance-wise this weekend," said Coach Marlo Mincey. "One of our goals is to get more members of our team race experience and build confidence in their events as well as place individuals in some events they don't normally compete in. We are constantly working toward getting race ready, from fitness to strategy, and it's all working toward doing our best at the conference championships at the end of next month."
The Eagles opened their 2013-14 season at the BSC Icebreaker at the Crossplex the first week of December. Graduate student Sherrill McFarlane posted the second-best time in Georgia Southern history in the 5,000 meter race and is aiming to improve her personal best and inscribe her name on that record in the first event of the day Saturday at 10 a.m. The final event for Georgia Southern will be the 4X400m Relay Saturday afternoon.
Sixteen personal bests in all were set at the BSC Icebreaker with several Eagles running participating in their regular as well as off events.
