SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Georgia Southern golfer Scott Wolfes will compete in the Jones Cup Invitational, a 54-hole stroke-play event featuring the finest amateurs from the U.S. and abroad, at Ocean Forest Golf Club Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
Wolfes hopes his familiarity with the course and a host of friendly faces in the gallery will give him an advantage in the prestigious amateur event. The junior is from neighboring St. Simons Island, Ga., and says he has played around 25 rounds at Forest Golf Club.
"I'll have a nice cheering section – a group of 20 people or so out there and maybe more if I can put myself in contention on the weekend," Wolfes said by phone Thursday while on his way to the practice round.
His knowledge of the course should also help him, though the recent cold weather may present different conditions than what he has seen in the past.
"I'm not sure if it's an advantage or disadvantage; I've probably been everywhere you don't want to be on that course," he joked. "It's in the top-3 of the toughest courses I've ever played. You have to hit fairways and greens or you are looking at bogey or worse. As many times as I've played it, I've shot par or under par maybe twice."
The field will be a tough test as well. It features around 90 of the top amateurs from around the globe.
"It's a tough test of golf, and the field makes it probably a top-3 amateur event in the world," he said.
Wolfes logged two top-10 and three top-20 finishes in five tournaments in the fall season. The reigning Southern Conference Golfer of the Year has two career victories and 11 top-10 finishes at Georgia Southern. He advanced to the round of 32 at last year's U.S. Amateur at Brookline Country Club.
Past participants in the Jones Cup range from current and future PGA Tour stars Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, Jeff Overton, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Gary Woodland as well as Past Champions DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed and John Peterson.
Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1996, Ocean Forest Golf Club is ranked among the top 100-golf courses in the U.S. annually.
