STATESBORO, Ga. – Will Evans shot a 3-under 68 to move into a tie for second (-2) and help the Georgia Southern golf team jump into second place after two rounds of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic Monday afternoon at Warren Golf Course.
Evans eagled the par-5 10th hole and posted consecutive birdies on 14, 15 and 16. The senior shot a 72 in the first round this morning as the teams played 36 holes today.
Christian Humber (-1), who is playing the tournament as an individual, also shot a 68 in the second round and is tied for 5th. The senior posted birdies on holes 1, 2, 10 and 17, and his lone blemish on the card was a bogey at 18.
Georgia Southern (+7) went 288-287 as a team in the first two rounds and is 10 strokes behind tournament leader Houston (-3). The Eagles are three strokes ahead of Michigan State (+10) and five in front of fourth-place Yale (+12).
"It was a solid first day of golf for the year," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We did a lot of good things but can clean up a little going into tomorrow. We are in the final group which is always a goal going into every tournament. We need to go out and put up a good round tomorrow to finish off a good tournament."
Charlie Martin shot a 69 and led the tournament after the first round. The junior had four birdies on the front nine and added another birdie on hole 10. He recorded a 74 in the second round and is tied for 11th.
Newcomer Kim Koivu is tied for 15th after firing a pair of 72s on the day. Henry Mabbett carded a 74 in each round, and Scott Wolfes posted a 73 in the second round after recording an 80 on the first 18.
The third and final round of the tournament is set for Tuesday, and the Eagles will tee off hole 1 at 10 a.m.
