STATESBORO, Ga. – Inclement weather has forced Georgia Southern and Georgia State to move Sunday's exhibition match to Statesboro. The battle of the GSUs will start at 4 p.m. from the Eagle Soccer Field.
Fans who cannot be at the match can keep up with the proceedings on twitter @GSAthletics_WSO where live in-game updates will be available. No other live stats coverage will be available.
Georgia Southern enters the 2013 as the defending Southern Conference Champions and returns its top scorer from a year ago, Nora El-Shami. As a freshman, El-Shami scored five goals and posted three assists. Now a junior, Sydnie Van Curen also posted five goals with one assist.
The Eagles stormed through the SoCon Tournament, not allowing a goal in the three matches as goalkeeper Katie Merson added to her school record tally of 10 shutouts in a season. Southern will be without Merson this season after the senior sustained an injury in the summer. The Eagles will turn to Emily Gossen and Heather Kirkover between the pipes this season.
Georgia State began the fall with an exhibition loss on Friday to College of Charleston. The Panthers never led on the day and fell at home, 3-2.
The Eagles are just a week from the 2013 season opener with a trip to face Indiana State and Indiana next weekend. The season opener against the Sycamores in Terre Haute is set for Friday night at 7 p.m. Georgia Southern then travels to face the Hoosiers in Bloomington on Sunday, August 25th at 1 p.m.
