Softball Travels to 2013 SoCon Tournament

STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball kicks off the 2013 SoCon Tournament on Wednesday afternoon against Chattanooga in Greensboro. The defending SoCon Champions are seeded third in this year’s tournament. GSU’s opening round game will be a matchup of the only two teams to play in all 20 SoCon Softball Tournaments.

For the second straight season and fourth time in the last five seasons, Georgia Southern enters the postseason with the SoCon Pitcher of the Year headlining the rotation. Sarah Purvis picked up her second SoCon postseason pitching accolade by going 8-2 in league play with a 1.30 ERA.
Kourtny Thomas and Shelby Morrill both picked up All-SoCon honors, with Thomas joining Purvis on the first team. Thomas is one of the SoCon’s most feared hitters, earning 31 walks with 11 home runs. Morrill, the Eagles’ designated player this season, led the Eagles at the plate with a .321 average and a .491 slugging percentage.
The Eagles play this week for their fourth SoCon Tournament Championship, looking to build on titles in 2012, 2006 and 1999. GSU is 44-34 all-time in the SoCon Tournament and enter the postseason ranked 83rd in the most-recent NCAA RPI.
