CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Georgia Southern golf team had a much better outing in day two of the 77th SoCon Championships, shaving 22 strokes of their first round score to shoot a 293, the third lowest total of the second round at Ralston Creek Course Monday.
Georgia Southern (+32) moved up one spot into sixth place, four shots clear of Samford (+36) and one behind Elon (+31). Chattanooga (+12) shot a 290 and leads the tournament by three strokes over Davidson (+15), which carded a 294. College of Charleston (+24) posted a 291 to move into third, and Appalachian State (+27) is in fourth.
Chattanooga's Steven Fox posted a 71 to move into first place, and Josh Lorenzetti from College of Charleston fired a 69, the lowest round of the tourney, to move into a tie for second. Davidson's Todd Eckstein, Sunday's leader, shot a 74 and is tied for second.
Scott Wolfes (T15) led the Eagles with a 2-under 70, the second lowest score of the day, and Will Evans (T15) shot a 72. Christian Humber posted a 74, and Hayden Anderson notched a 77. Charlie Martin finished with a 79.
There was a little less wind today than Sunday's round, but the temperature was in the 50s for most of Georgia Southern's 18 holes. The Eagles were hoping to use their early tee time to a greater advantage by posting a low score early and that the gusty winds would kick back up in the afternoon, like Sunday.
"We played solid today but really only got three out of the four scores we needed," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "Scott had a good comeback today, Will was steady as usual and Christian had a nice round. We need all five guys to be in the ball game tomorrow and post our best four scores to see if we can climb up some more."
Wolfes (right) played a bogey-free round and notched birdies on the par-5 11th hole and the par-4 14th. The sophomore had birdie opportunities on holes 6 and 18, a pair of par 5s, but could not cash in.
Evans got off to a bad start with a double bogey on the first hole but followed that with a birdie on hole 2. The junior knocked his tee shot within two feet on the par-3 4th hole and made birdie en route to finishing even through the first nine. He birdied the par-3 12th hole and bogeyed 15 to finish the day at even par.
Birdies on holes 6 and 12 helped Humber play the first 15 holes at even par. The junior stumbled a touch at the finish line, playing the final three holes at 2-over for his 74.
Anderson struggled a bit with three bogeys on the front nine and squeezed a birdie between double bogeys on 10 and 12, two of the tougher holes on the course. The junior played his final six holes at 1-under, including a birdie on 18, to finish 5-over for the day.
A triple bogey on the first hole and three straight bogeys on 12, 13 and 14, put a damper on Martin's day. The sophomore, who led the Eagles with a 77 yesterday, played his final four holes at 1-under to finish the day at 7-over.
The tournament concludes tomorrow, and Georgia Southern will tee off at 9:40 a.m.
